Stuff I’ve been up to that’s been distracting me.
Last post, I wrote about how depression has been getting in the way of things. This one’s about some of the good stuff that’s been distracting me.
I’ve written a series of webcomics as part of the War for Rayuba Original Character Tournament (OCT), working in collaboration with the wonderful MooseScribbles, who brought me on first as an editor, and then his writer.
Since I joined as writer seven months ago, we’ve created over 75 pages of comics, not including the 40-page finale made with MrFifi. For all of that, I was the primary writer, which was a fascinating challenge as a new author. Balancing my vision with that of the creators of the characters I was using was a test in communication and compromise, and one I feel has enriched all participants.
Another distraction has been my study of Judaism. My family history there is dim and distant, and it wasn’t until studying the myth of The Golem of Prague in University that I thought to get in touch with my local Jewish community, something I have not regretted in the slightest. A conversion course is no light undertaking, not to mention the task of learning Hebrew.
Though time-consuming, this learning has me feeling a sense of connection to the past, to people I have only known names on a page, as well as a connection to my local Jewish community, who have been a source of companionship and comfort in these otherwise lonely pandemic days.
I’ve also (finally) been able to secure some full-time work, which whilst weighing on my schedule, will do a lot to ease my money worries. Who knows? Perhaps this new limitation on my writing time will make the hours I still have free to devote to my passion seem more precious, and thus be more productive.
That’s what I’m hoping, at any rate.
Next update, I’m thinking of actually publishing one of my short stories here, so that readers can have something to sink their teeth into.
